An exhibition featuring works from the 25th St Luke International Art Workshop opened at the Vladimir "The Master" Dimitrov Art Gallery in Kyustendil on Saturday.

This year's participants included Boris Zhelev, Bozhidar Tonev, Kaliya Kalacheva, Nikoleta Ivanova, Rangel Simeonov, Sevda Poturlyan, Stoyan Iliev, Stanislav Bozhankov, Hadzi-Nikolov and Yana Geisweiller.

Traditionally, the workshop concludes with an exhibition on October 18, the day the Orthodox Church commemorates St Luke, patron of icon painters and disciple of Jesus Christ, credited with creating the first icon of the Virgin and Child and the icons of the apostles Peter and Paul.

"Some colleagues exhibited halfway through the week of the workshop. The weather was gloomy, but it produced wonderfully colourful works," organizer Georgi Andonov told BTA.

Founded in 1993 by the Kyustendil Artists' Association and revived in 2018 after a brief hiatus, the workshop has hosted over 260 artists from Bulgaria, France, Britain, Germany, Austria, Poland, Czechia and Russia, among others. In 2004, 180 works from past editions were donated.

This year's exhibition was opened by Kyustendil Mayor Ognyan Atanasov and gallery director Valentin Gospodinov. Plans were discussed to hold a major exhibition of all past participants' works after the gallery's renovation is completed.

The workshop is organized by Kyustendil Municipality, the St Luke International Workshop Association, and Vladimir "The Master" Dimitrov Art Gallery. Its seeks to attract established artists and preserve their contribution to Kyustendil's cultural history. Over the years, the workshop has become a prestigious event in Bulgaria and a continuation of the contribution of Kyustendil's School of Art.
