Rose-picking in the gardens near the village of Rozovo, South Central Bulgaria, attracted visitors from around the world on Saturday. Tourists who came to learn about the Damask rose and the history of the Rose Valley were welcomed with bread and salt, then took part in the rose-picking and extraction process.

Rose petals are picked early in the morning when the concentration of essential oil in them is the highest. Songs are sung, and traditional horo dances are performed, while girls compete to see who will collect the most petals. Extracting the oil begins as soon as the picking is finished.

Depending on the type of rose, producing 1 kg of rose oil requires between 3 and 7 tonnes of rose petals.

Rose picking is an integral part of the Rose Festival in Kazanlak, which has been promoting the region for more than 120 years. This year's festival will culminate on June 6, 7 and 8.
