Recognized as one of the fifty greatest scientists in the world last year by the prestigious "Explorers Club" in New York, Manuel Jose Carpintero, together with two fellow professors and six Erasmus students, visited the Paleontology Museum at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski” and the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute (BAI), the press centre of the university said on Tuesday.

The Spanish guests toured the museum with the famous specimen of a proboscidean - Deinotherium, and then got acquainted with the history of Bulgarian polar research and the long-standing friendly relations with Spanish Antarctic scientists.

The students showed great interest in the impromptu exhibition of specimens of invertebrate fauna and fossils from Livingston Island.

Prof. Christo Pimpirev, chairman of the BAI and leader of the Bulgarian Antarctic expeditions, presented his book "Antarctic Diaries" in Spanish translation to each of the guests, while he received a valuable copy of a book describing the tenth anniversary of the research of the Astronomical and Geographical Society of Ciudad Real, Spain.
