The arrival of the Panagia "Axion Esti" (It Is Truly Right) icon in Pomories Wednesday gave the start of the eponymous 19th International Orthodox Music Festival in the coastal town. With the permission of His Holiness Patriarch Nophyte, the icon was transported from the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia and will be displayed at the town's Nativity of the Theotokos church until June 11.
The icon has been an integral part of the fest since 2013.
The official start was given by Mayor Ivan Alexiev, who welcomed everyone to the International Festival of Orthodox Music, which turned Pomorie into a hub of Orthodoxy. In his welcoming words, the mayor also thanked for the honour bestowed upon the town that the miraculous icon once again be its patroness in this godly work.
This year's edition of the Orthodox musical forum will feature 340 participants grouped in 14 ensembles from Bulgaria, Serbia and Poland.
The Panagia "Axion Esti" icon was gifted to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church by the monks of Mount Athos.
