Works by 20th-century classic authors and contemporary Bulgarian writers are on display at the 41st edition of the Slovenian Book Fair, which opened on November 24 at the Exhibition and Convention Centre in Ljubljana, the Bulgarian Embassy in Slovenia said.
Georgi Gospodinov is the most prominently featured Bulgarian author at this year’s fair. His short-story collection And Other Stories, published in Slovenian in October by Cankarjeva založba publishing house, is available at the publisher’s stand. The Slovenian edition includes the foreword from the third Bulgarian edition and is part of the prestigious Contemporary Classics series, the Embassy said.
At the stand of the Slovenian Writers’ Association, readers can find the Booker Prize-winning novel Time Shelter. Its second Slovenian edition was released this autumn. The work is displayed by the Association for a reason: it organizes the Vilenica International Literary Festival, whose Grand Prize in September 2025 was awarded to Gospodinov, the Embassy added.
The publishing house Beletrina is presenting Kapka Kassabova’s novel Border (translated by Petra Meterc), part of the author’s so-called Balkan tetralogy, during the week-long fair.
Fans of historical literature can find The Case of Cem by Vera Mutafchieva, released late last year by Goga Publishing in Novo Mesto (translated by Borut Omerzel). Both The Case of Cem and Border were included in the 100 Best Books of 2024 list of the magazine Bukla, as well as among the 24 most sought-after books at Ljubljana’s City Library, the Embassy noted.
Dimitar Dinev and Vesela Lyakhova are represented at the fair at the stand of the LUD Literatura publishing house and cultural association.
Dinev’s short-story collection A Light Above a Head is part of the Steps series and reflects on "the East’s longing for the West", the Embassy said.
Vesela Lyakhova is featured with her collection of contemporary short stories Cetrt ob obvoznici (Neighbourhood "Zona Obikolna") portraying characters from all walks of life in Bulgaria. An excerpt from the book was included in the online anthology Contemporary Slavic Short Story (2021), compiled by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana, with the participation of the Bulgarian Studies lectureship, the Embassy added.
The fair, which runs until November 30, offers more than 300 events ranging from meetings with Slovenian and international authors to discussions and book presentations by the 114 participating exhibitors and publishers.
