Despite the rapidly changing media landscape, it is content - not the platform - that will determine the presence, influence, and longevity of media, said Dimitar Nikolov, Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Culture and Media, on Tuesday. He was speaking at the opening of a conference titled "The European Media Freedom Act - a Framework for Independence and Pluralism in the European Union", organized by the Council for Electronic Media (CEM).
Nikolov noted that, as a publisher, he knows that freedom of speech also requires responsibility.
He added that many of his fellow publishers are forced to operate in "a fragmented and polluted market environment filled with unfair practices".
Regrettably, journalism is not among the well-paid, prestigious, or highly desired professions, he said. For this reason, on the first day of his mandate in his new role, he made a commitment to work toward a stable regulatory framework for the media sector within cultural policies and industries.
