Population ageing in Bulgaria continues to deepen as one of the most significant demographic trends, according to data cited in the 2023-2024 Report on the Implementation of the National Strategy for Active Ageing in Bulgaria (2019-2030). The document has been published for public consultation on www.strategy.bg, the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy said in a press release on Wednesday.

The 1,544,245 people aged 65 and older accounted for 24% of the country's population at the end of 2024. This proportion was 5.5% up from 2011, national statistics show. The ratio of working-age to non-working-age people increased from 46.5% in 2011 to 61% in 2024.

The goal of the National Strategy for Active Ageing is to optimize opportunities for a full-fledged participation of Bulgaria's older population in the country's socio-economic development by means of subsidized employment for pre-retirees on national and EU funding, access to occupational training and other targeted measures and programmes.
