The Road Infrastructure Agency is currently considering developing a smart traffic management system like in Western Europe, Regional Development Minister Ivan Ivanov said here on Tuesday. If this year's toll funds are allocated, next year such a system could be used for traffic management on motorways, he added.

Ivanov and Interior Minister Daniel Mitov inspected in Ihtiman how the toll management provides the Interior Ministry with data on traffic violations in the emergency lane.

According to the Regional Minister, the measure is extremely good and in practice these are the actions that the state is taking after a number of decisions of the Council of Ministers, following the Prime Minister's request in this direction. It is already visible that the Interior Ministry has taken the necessary actions, Ivanov added.

"We have 49 gantry frames that detect such violations, when the changes in the road traffic law come into force and the average speed starts to be recorded, all violations in the emergency lane will be sanctioned," he stressed. He added that once the changes in the law are passed on second reading and come into force, the cameras of the municipalities will also be able to detect violators on the road.

In April, Parliament approved five bills on first reading to amend the Road Traffic Act. One major change would allow automated systems to issue electronic tickets for minor traffic violations - even without direct police involvement - provided the offense does not involve license suspension or penalty points. These e-tickets will be subject to appeal under the Administrative Violations and Penalties Act.
