At its regular meeting on Wednesday, the Council of Ministers approved the Updated National Air Pollution Control Programme (NAPCP) 2020–2030. The programme was developed on the basis of a consultancy services agreement signed between the Environment and Water Ministry and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development in support of air quality management, the Government Information Service reported.

The adoption and implementation of the Updated National Air Pollution Control Programme aim to introduce additional national policies and measures enabling Bulgaria to meet its obligations to reduce total annual anthropogenic emissions of certain air pollutants during the period 2020–2029 and beyond 2030.

The programme includes measures in sectors that are significant sources of emissions of ammonia, particulate matter, and non-methane volatile organic compounds into the ambient air, such as agriculture, domestic heating, and the production and use of solvents.

The Updated NAPCP will also contribute to achieving the European Union’s long-term goal of attaining air quality levels in line with the Air Quality Guidelines published by the World Health Organization.
