site.btaGERB Leader: National Stability Key amid Escalating Global Conflicts

The more stable Bulgaria appears and the more effectively the Government and institutions function, the better, in the current global crisis situation, GERB leader Boyko Borissov told reporters in Parliament on Friday. He pointed to growing global insecurity, citing the conflicts between Ukraine and Russia, Iran and Israel, the situation in Gaza, and recent developments in Los Angeles.

Borissov was responding to journalists' questions regarding Israel’s attacks on Iran overnight and what Bulgaria’s position should be. “The country’s position should be in support of achieving peace across the region. Such wars always have severe consequences. Iran is not that far from us,” he noted.

Asked whether President Rumen Radev should convene a meeting of the Consultative Council on National Security, Borissov said that it is the President’s decision.

Regarding the Security Council under the Council of Ministers, Borissov stated that it meets regularly. “Keep in mind that military intelligence, in particular, is monitoring the situation there very closely,” he added.

“These are global problems. They don’t affect just one or two countries. That’s why strong leadership is needed to bring these wars to an end,” Borissov said. When asked if he justified Israel’s attack, he commented that Israel responded to previous events in Gaza.

“In war, there are no real winners, because there are casualties. That’s why a bad peace is better than a war. There is no such thing as a good war. All of us want this to stop as soon as possible,” Borissov concluded.
