Two patients received kidney transplants at Sofia's Alexandrovska University Hospital thanks to the organ donation of a 64-year-old woman, Bulgaria’s Executive Agency Medical Supervision announced Monday.
A 61-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man underwent successful kidney transplants performed by a surgical team from the hospital’s urology department, led by Professor Krasimir Yanev. The operations were made possible following the consent of the donor’s family, who chose to give the gift of life after her passing.
The donor procedure was coordinated by Dr. Andon Arabadzhiev and a medical team at the regional hospital in Kyustendil.
In addition, a 49-year-old man received a successful liver transplant from the same donor, carried out by a team at the Military Medical Academy (MMA) in Sofia under the leadership of Professor Ivelin Takorov.
According to hospital sources, all transplant recipients are in stable condition and remain under close observation in intensive care. Due to medical limitations, no other organs were transplanted.
Bulgaria’s Ministry of Health and the Executive Agency for Medical Supervision expressed their heartfelt condolences to the donor’s family and deep gratitude for their life-saving decision. They also commended the medical teams involved in the complex operations.
