Minister of Environment and Water Manol Genov took part in an informal meeting of environment ministers from EU member states, a gathering traditionally held during each EU Council rotating presidency, Genov's Ministry said in a press-release on Tuesday.
The one-day session, held under the Polish EU Council Presidency, centred on countering disinformation and adapting to climate change. Ministers agreed that disinformation is a cross-border challenge and called for improved information-sharing, closer coordination and targeted training.
Bulgaria backed the initiative, noting that environmental and climate topics often attract false or misleading claims. Institutions must provide clear, accessible information on policies and foster open public debate, Genov said, adding that freedom of thought and expression must be upheld.
The meeting then turned to the forthcoming European adaptation plan. Adaptation is a strategic EU priority aimed at reducing climate impacts and strengthening societal and economic resilience. The European Commission is drafting the plan with input from member states.
Genov welcomed the move as a timely response to rising climate risks. He listed Bulgaria’s priorities: stronger support for regional and local measures, access to high-quality climate data, modelling tools and early-warning systems, promotion of nature-based solutions and adaptation of critical infrastructure. He underlined the need to respect national circumstances and confirmed Bulgaria’s readiness to work closely with the Commission.
