The Council of Ministers Wednesday approved a draft memorandum for regular political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of Bulgaria and Libya intended to serve as a basis for negotiations.

The Government Information Service said in a press release that in the context of the fast-moving international environment, the North African region is becoming increasingly important for the European Union and Bulgaria. This importance arises from opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation and from emerging threats linked to the growing instability in the Sahel region and increased migration pressure. Libya is one of the key factors for security and stability in North Africa and Sahel.

Both countries are keen on establishing regular exchanges and consultations between their foreign ministries to address regional dynamics and other key issues on the international agenda.

Diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Libya were established on June 30, 1963. Bulgaria opened its embassy in Tripoli in 1966, and Libya established its embassy in Sofia in 1978.
