Businesses invest in philanthropic causes which they are familiar with and most other causes remain misunderstood, said the Executive Director of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB), Vanya Rutarova-Georgieva. She was among the participants in a discussion on charitable giving and donation practices, held in Sofia Tuesday by BSPB and the Stenata store for sports gear and clothing. Titled "Donors by Nature", the discussion was attended by representatives of the business and non-governmental sector, who presented examples of successful partnerships and sustainable donation practices in favor of important conservation causes.

The discussion was scheduled to take place on the International Volunteer Day.

Boryana Kirilova from the Bulgarian Donors Forum presented an analysis of donations in 2022. Donations totaled BGN 124 million, of which 45% were made by companies, 39% by not-for-profits and 18% were donated by individuals.

According to her, the most donations by corporate donors (35% of all) went to healthcare. NGOs and individuals donated the most for social causes, followed by education and science, as well as healthcare. Due to the highly underfunded health and social system, donors naturally go there, Kirilova commented.
