The Health Ministry is inviting candidates for training in air emergency medical assistance. The physicians and nurses who finish the course will be employed on medical helicopters based at airfields in Vrazhdebna (Sofia) and the northern town of Dolna Mitropolia.

The training will take place in a facility of Sofia's Military Medical Academy. The 15-day course will start at the beginning of May, the Health Ministry said.

“We already have an agreement with the Italian company Leonardo and we will receive the first helicopter for air emergency medical assistance on 15 December," caretaker Health Minister Assen Medzhidiev said on the Bulgarian National Television.

The agreement with the Italian company is for of six helicopters, which will be received over the next few years, the Health Minister said. “This week, we will announce a public tender for the lease of two helicopters that will come from Italy with crews and technicians, so that we can launch this air ambulance service as early as the summer,” Medzhidiev said.

He said that work is already underway with the State Aviation Operator and that Air Force airfields will also be used. The assistance of the Air Force is important for the preparation and construction of hangars, he said. "The construction of landing sites at hospitals is a slightly longer process, but it has begun. The medical establishments with landing sites have been designated, as well as where hangars will be built, and a national coordination centre in Sofia has also been designated," the caretaker Health Minister said.
