The European Spartan Exercise 2022 (ESE 2022), which Bulgaria is hosting for the fifth timeq has begun, the Defence Ministry said on Monday. This year the exercise is taking place between October 3 and 14 and involves C-27J Spartan military aircraft and crews from Bulgaria, Italy, Lithuania and Romania.

Tactical approaches, personnel airdrop and engine running operations will be practiced at the airfields at Bezmer and Cheshnegirovo. At the airfield in Dolna Mitropolya crews will perform flights at low altitude, tactical flights and anti-air defence.

Teams will practice procedures for medical evacuation by air.

The international exercise has taken place for six years as part of a programme agreement between EU countries operating C-27J military aircraft.
