Sofia Municipality and three companies from the construction and innovation sectors have established a platform to promote climate-neutral buildings and construction in the capital through expert exchange, joint work and innovative solutions, the municipality said on Friday.

The founding memorandum was signed by representatives of the municipality and Triple Green Building Group Bulgaria, Holcim Bulgaria and Cleantech Bulgaria. The initiative aims to support the implementation of Sofia’s Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan for 2021–2030 and the Sofia Climate City Contract.

“Buildings are the face of our city, but they are also its largest resource consumers. To make Sofia a modern, green and sustainable European city, we need the knowledge, innovation and capacity of the entire construction, architecture and investment sectors,” Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev said, according to the municipality’s press release.

Sofia’s climate-neutrality goals cannot be achieved by a single office or administration but require a shared vision, mutual trust and daily cooperation, Terziev said. The platform is open to investors, architects, engineers, companies and organizations that share its goals.

Deputy Mayor for Ecology Nikolay Nedelkov said tangible results would require faster energy renovation, the adoption of near-zero-energy building standards, the use of low-carbon materials and sustainable recovery of construction waste.

The platform will organize regular expert meetings, discussions and working groups on topics including energy management, green infrastructure, energy-positive buildings and the circular economy in construction.

The three companies have pledged to work with the municipality, exchange expertise and best practices, and test innovative solutions to decarbonize buildings.

The initiative supports Sofia’s commitments under the European Union Mission for 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030. The European Commission has awarded Sofia the EU Mission Label for its climate plan.

Last year, Terziev said Sofia aimed to become climate-neutral by 2030, describing this as both a local goal and a European commitment to the world and future generations.
