Atanas Gebrev, a prosecutor at the Supreme Cassation Prosecution Office, has been nominated for election to Bulgaria's Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) from the prosecutors' quota, the SJC said on Wednesday.
Gebrev has 36 years of experience as a magistrate. He began as a judicial candidate at the Sofia City Court (1989-1990), followed by six years as an investigator (1991-1997). From 1997 to 2007, he served as a judge at the Sofia Military Court before joining the Supreme Cassation Prosecution Office, where he has worked for 19 years in various roles, including as head of the Inspection Sector. Since 2015, he has been a prosecutor in the Judicial Department, Criminal Judicial Supervision Directorate.
The nomination was submitted by magistrates from the Supreme Cassation Prosecution Office and Sofia District Prosecution Office, who highlight Gebrev's detailed knowledge of both pre-trial and judicial proceedings, as well as his understanding of the judiciary's challenges and possible solutions.
The nomination also highlights his work on complex cases, leadership of inspections at the Sofia Appellate Prosecution Office and National Investigation Service, and successful chairing of selection committees.
