site.btaVarna Celebrates 148 Years Since Liberation
Varna marked the 148th anniversary of its Liberation with a military ceremony and wreath-laying at the monument in the courtyard of the St Archangel Michael Spiritual and Educational Centre on Monday.
The event was attended by Regional Governor Mario Smarkov, Municipal Council Chair Hristo Dimitrov, Deputy Mayor Sofia Koleva, Deputy Commander of the Bulgarian Navy Flotilla Admiral Vanyo Musinski, military officers and local officials.
A memorial service for those who died and a thanksgiving prayer were led by clergy from the Varna and Veliki Preslav Diocese.
Speakers at the event noted that although the Treaty of San Stefano provided for the withdrawal of Ottoman garrisons from Varna and Shumen, this did not happen immediately. Only during the fifth session of the Congress of Berlin in June 1878 did the Ottoman Empire agree to begin negotiations on withdrawing from Varna. Russian troops entered the city on July 27, 1878, where they were welcomed by local Bulgarians at the St Archangel Michael Church.
