site.btaBulgaria Marks World Migratory Bird Day with Bird Conservation Campaign
World Migratory Bird Day was marked on May 9 as a global campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of protecting migratory birds and their habitats along migration routes, the Ministry of Environment and Water said here on Saturday.
This year’s theme, “Every Bird Counts - Your Observation Matters,” highlights the role of public participation in collecting data on bird populations, migration patterns, and environmental threats. Citizens’ observations, ranging from backyard sightings to organized surveys, contribute valuable scientific data used in conservation efforts and policy-making.
In Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds encouraged participation in a regional monitoring initiative on May 9–10, where volunteers in 13 countries will record bird observations using mobile apps and online platforms to improve biodiversity data.
The campaign also builds on earlier citizen efforts, such as a nationwide sparrow count in April that gathered data from hundreds of locations across the country.
