A specialized training on river connectivity restoration will take place in Bulgaria from July 14 to 17, the organizers from the Science for Nature Foundation and the Science for Nature Association said on Wednesday. 

The course, part of the River Life project, will be led by international experts and is open to anyone working in the natural sciences with an interest in river ecosystems and landscape ecology. It aims to bring together young specialists, researchers, and practitioners from across Europe working in river management and water policies.

"River management in Europe is entering a new era, seeking a balance between flood protection and the restoration of rivers as functioning ecosystems", the organizers emphasized, adding that natural river systems are more adaptable to extreme events, and their restoration is an effective tool for risk management. They pointed out that river connectivity restoration is a key priority for the conservation of freshwater ecosystems and sustainable water management in Europe.

Over the course of the training, participants will undergo both theoretical lectures and practical fieldwork. Topics include barrier inventory, hydromorphological data collection and analysis, river status assessment according to European requirements, and planning restoration measures with attention to both public safety and the ecological condition of water bodies.
