On the final plenary day of the 51st National Assembly, before the MPs take a recess because of the upcoming election campaign for the snap parliamentary elections on April 19, Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) MP Nadezhda Yordanova, in a statement read out from the parliamentary rostrum, said that the political crisis will not be resolved until the corrupt system is dismantled and the rule of law is upheld.
In her words, the source of the political instability that has persisted for years is the "capture of institutions" and the illegitimate exercise of power. She said that without effective and independent institutions, there can be no sustainable prospect for the country’s development.
Yordanova noted that joining the eurozone is an important national goal on which progress has been made, but parallel efforts to curb corruption and strengthen institutions have not yielded the necessary results. In her view, without the rule of law, the benefits of European integration could be compromised.
She added that public discontent, expressed through protests, is the result of accumulated problems such as business uncertainty, inefficient spending of public funds, and weaknesses in key systems such as infrastructure and healthcare.
She recalled that, right at the start of the parliament’s term, she had outlined the need to choose between early elections and seeking solutions to overcome the crisis through reforms, emphasizing that the political crisis remains unresolved. As a solution, Yordanova pointed to the need to guarantee the rule of law, modernize the state, and free institutions from dependencies. According to her, this is the only way to achieve stability and realize the country’s potential within the European Union.
In conclusion, she stated that the coalition will continue to uphold its position for "Bulgaria at the heart of Europe" and expressed confidence that citizens will give their assessment in the upcoming elections.
