Bulgaria and Turkiye are exploring opportunities to strengthen defence cooperation against the backdrop of the wars in Ukraine and Iran. The issue was discussed during a meeting between Bulgarian caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov and Turkiye’s Ambassador to Bulgaria Mehmet Sait Uyanik at the Council of Ministers of Bulgaria, according to a government post on Facebook.
During the meeting, Gurov stressed that Turkiye is not only a neighbour of Bulgaria but also a NATO ally and a key partner in a number of important areas. He said that the two countries maintain stable cooperation in activities aimed at ensuring the security of Bulgarian and European citizens.
Among the shared risks facing both countries, Gurov highlighted border security, illegal migration and the fight against terrorism.
For his part, Ambassador Uyanik said that Bulgaria remains an attractive destination for Turkish investors, who continue to show interest in expanding business activities in various sectors of the Bulgarian economy.
Gurov also emphasized that Bulgaria firmly supports the modernization of border crossing checkpoints along the common border between the two countries. According to him, the construction of a new terminal would significantly facilitate traffic at the world’s second-busiest land border crossing.
