Protection has been assigned to Bulgarian European Prosecutor Teodora Georgieva following reports of threats against her. Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev announced this after an official commemoration of the International Day for Remembrance of Fallen Officers, which included wreath-laying at the monument to fallen police officers in the capital Sofia.
He said that the report was submitted through the caretaker Minister of Justice, who had been personally informed by Georgieva.
“I reviewed the report and determined that it should be forwarded to the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, where it was assigned for investigation. After assessing the case, it was decided that, given its particular circumstances, security protection was necessary,” Dechev said.
He added that the decision is also linked to events involving Prosecutor Georgieva from last year. The interior minister recalled that after Georgieva publicly spoke about issues in cooperation with certain state institutions, a fire broke out in her mother’s house, tragically claiming her mother’s life.
Dechev further noted that Georgieva claims to have been threatened or to feel threatened by influential figures in the state. "In this situation, the competent authority has determined that providing security is necessary,” he said.
He said that initially assistance was sought from the Protection Bureau at the Ministry of Justice since by law it is responsible for the security of threatened magistrates. According to Dechev, it was later determined that there was no obstacle for the Ministry of Interior to provide such protection as well.
Teodora Georgieva was appointed a European prosecutor from Bulgaria in July 2020. In September 2025, the College of the EPPO initiated disciplinary proceedings against her and in February 2026 she was found guilty of serious misconduct.
