As tensions and public order disturbances are reported in parts of Mexico, Bulgarian citizens – tourists or permanent residents in the country – are advised to avoid all travel to the affected Mexican states for the time being, minimize their movements, refrain from visiting public places, and follow strictly the instructions of the competent authorities, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said on its website on Monday.

After an operation carried out by the security forces of Mexico against organized crime in the state of Jalisco, disturbances of public order are currently being observed, including road blockades, shootings, and the detention of civilians in various parts of the country, the Foreign Ministry said. Tension has also been registered in the states of Guanajuato and Michoacan, and there is a risk that incidents may spread to the states of Nayarit, Colima, and Tamaulipas.

On Sunday, February 22, the Mexican Army announced that during the operation drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, had been killed, AFP said. The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, urged Mexicans to remain calm. “We must stay informed and calm,” Sheinbaum said in a post on the social network X, after armed men blocked roads and set fire to several shops in the states of Jalisco, Michoacan, Guanajuato, Puebla, and Sinaloa.
