Citizens calling for an independent judiciary gathered outside the Palace of Justice in Sofia on Thursday evening. The facade of the building featured a laser light show displaying slogans such as "Sarafov Out", "Pigsty", and images of a broom, a pig and a red card. The demonstration was organized by the Justice for All initiative under the slogan "SarafoFF! The Last Waltz" and was officially registered with Sofia Municipality.
The civil organization claims that Bulgarian justice is "a hostage to massive private interests, meaning it can block any other branch of power at any time".
On October 2, two panels of the Supreme Court of Cassation refused to initiate proceedings on requests filed by the acting Prosecutor General for the resumption of criminal proceedings. The judges argued that Borislav Sarafov could not perform the functions of acting Prosecutor General as appointed by the Prosecutors Chamber of the Supreme Judicial Council. The Court argued that under the amended Judicial System Act, a temporary replacement of the Prosecutor General may not be appointed for a period longer than six months, and that six months from the entry into force of the new provision had expired on July 21.
