site.btaGERB Leader: Whatever CC-DB Does, Bulgaria Will Be in the Eurozone From January 1
Commenting protests planned over the 2026 budget Wednesday evening by the opposition Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB), GERB leader Boyko Borissov said "no matter how hard CC-DB try, Bulgaria will be a member of the eurozone from January 1".
In recent days, Borissov has been consistently saying that CC-DB-organized protests for any cause actually aim to torpedo Bulgaria's entry in the eurozone. Continue the Change leader Assen Vassilev commented that his party "will oppose any budget if it is used for theft, regardless of the currency" and that "the protests are entirely about preventing the power holders from dipping into the pockets of Bulgarian citizens to fill their own coffers".
This country is set to adopt the euro on January 1, 2026.
"Protests are a good thing. They show that there is democracy. In many countries, such things do not happen – precisely in the countries that [President Rumen] Radev admires, where there are no protests", Borissov commented. He noted that there were similar protests back in 2020, when Bulgaria was brought into the eurozone waiting room and the European Banking Union.
Asked to comment the increase of the dividend tax and retirement contributions, Borissov said that Bulgaria has the lowest taxes and fees.
Regarding the proposal to amend the Gambling Act to allow a concession for the Bulgarian Sports Totalizator, Borissov said he agreed that a 15-year concession should be awarded.
The GERB leader commented that the state gambling operator is by far outperformed by private operators.
