Bulgaria must continue to invest systematically and responsibly in its defence capabilities, GERB leader Boyko Borissov said in a Facebook post on Tuesday following a meeting with Gunther Krichbaum, State Minister for Europe at Germany’s Federal Foreign Office. According to Borissov, strengthening the army, modernization, and enhancing interoperability with allies remain key priorities for GERB, as a strong defence guarantees national security and regional stability. Borissov is the Floor Leader of the largest parliamentary group in Bulgarian Parliament, GERB-UDF.

During the meeting, Borissov stressed that lasting peace in Ukraine remains a top priority for the European Union (EU), which continues to provide consistent support ranging from humanitarian and economic aid to efforts aimed at bolstering defence and stability in the region. Europe is strongest when united, and the war on its borders clearly demonstrates the importance of upholding international law, supporting countries under direct threat, and working towards lasting solutions that ensure security across the continent, he said.

Borissov and Krichbaum also discussed European security policies, the need for closer coordination among EU Member States, and Bulgaria’s role in enhancing the EU’s resilience.

“Bulgaria’s planned entry into the eurozone on January 1, 2026, represents a strategic step toward deeper economic and political integration within the EU. The move will provide greater financial stability, facilitate business, and create conditions for sustainable economic growth while strengthening Bulgaria’s position on the European stage,” Borissov wrote.

On Monday, the GERB leader met with David Praizendanz, a member of the German Bundestag, to discuss future partnership prospects. Borissov noted that Bulgaria and Germany share the understanding that the European perspective of the Balkan countries, Ukraine, and Moldova, as well as the strengthening of Europe's defence capabilities, are key to the stability of this region.
