site.btaVP Iotova: Safeguard Cyrillic Script and Bulgarian Language in the Digital Age
Vice President Iliana Iotova urged the protection of the Cyrillic script and Bulgarian language at the Deultum-Debelt National Archaeological Reserve on Saturday, during commemorations marking 1,160 years since Bulgaria’s Christianization.
Iotova warned that Cyrillic is gradually losing ground, as more children use Latin letters on social media and entire countries switch alphabets. She stressed the duty to preserve the script, as passed down by Saints Cyril and Methodius, their disciples, and Knyaz Boris I.
She described Cyrillic as inseparable from Bulgarian identity and heritage, saying that possessing one’s own script, culture, and language is a mark of independence. Iotova recalled Knyaz Boris I’s decision to adopt Christianity as the cornerstone for Bulgaria’s spiritual and cultural unity, praising his role in shaping Bulgaria as a spiritual centre of Europe.
At the ceremony, Iotova presented the Deultum-Debelt Museum with two volumes of reports from international forums on Cyrillic, organized by the President’s administration. She declared that Bulgarian studies remain vibrant and highlighted Bulgaria’s unique continuity since 681.
Concluding her remarks, Iotova noted the symbolism of the letter “Б” chosen for the Cyrillic forums, representing words in Bulgarian such as God (Бог), Bulgaria (България), Blessing (Благословия), Grace (Благодат), and Thank you (Благодаря).
