One person has died in the town of Brosteni in Suceava County, Northern Romania, following severe flooding triggered by torrential rainfall in the region. The news was reported on Monday by Raed Arafat, head of Romania’s Emergency Situations Department.
The worst-hit areas include the towns of Ostra, Frasin, and Doroteia, where bridges have either collapsed or sustained serious damage, and numerous trees have been brought down, according to information received at BTA. Large hailstones have caused extensive damage to crops and vehicles.
The situation remains critical in three municipalities in Neamt County as well, where nearly 700 people have been evacuated.
Romania’s Emergency Situations Department has mobilized additional resources from six counties to support firefighters in Suceava as they respond to the emergency.
Meanwhile, Romania’s National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management has issued red and orange warnings for dangerously high river levels in the wake of the recent downpours.
While northern Romania struggles with the aftermath of the flooding, the country’s southeast remains gripped by extreme heat. An orange alert for dangerously hot weather is in force today for Bucharest and seven other regions. In addition to the capital, the highest temperatures are expected in Giurgiu, Calarasi, Ialomita, Braila, Galaci, Ilfov, and the Black Sea coastal county of Constanta.
