The southwestern region of Sandanski as a tourist destination is completely unknown on the Turkish market, Georgi Kunchev, member of the Management Board of the regional tourism organisation - "Destination Sandanski", told BTA on Friday.

Kunchev analysed that there are quite a few tourists from Turkiye who visit Bulgarian ski resorts, but not many travel to Sandanski. "We attended the tourist exhibition in Istanbul and there I was personally convinced that we are an unknown destination. But we have a lot to offer", Kunchev pointed out.

According to Kunchev, the region would be of interest to Turkish tourists because of its spa and balneology facilities and resources, mineral water and treatment programmes. He explained that this would also increase the number of overnight stays in the region, which would have a positive effect on the regional employment rate.

The association invited two journalists - one from the "Millet" media group and one from  the daily Turkish newspaper "Hurriyet" - for an info tour to show them the area and discuss the possibilities of positioning Sandanski as a destination on the Turkish market.

In the meantime, the association has already held talks with large tour operators from Turkiye. "We have also spoken with our tourist attaché in Istanbul, with whom we are also planning some joint initiatives", explained Kunchev. The association assumes that they will make a breakthrough and succeed in attracting Turkish tourists to the area.
