Serbia's Foreign Ministry sent a protest note to Croatia accusing it of "the most blatant interference in Serbia's elections" and of increasingly biased media coverage of the country's domestic political situation, Serbian media reported Thursday. The note says that Serbia considers any attempt to exert external influence on its domestic political processes unacceptable, including direct or indirect interference in election activities and political competition during the campaign.

It also expresses concern over what it describes as one-sided and extremely negative portrayals of Serbia's domestic political situation, as well as attempts to link the country's political developments to an alleged threat to regional stability.

Relations between Serbia and Croatia deteriorated during the anti-government protests led by students following a railway station disaster in Novi Sad in 2024 that killed 16 people. In early 2025, five Croatian citizens attending a civil society seminar were deported from Belgrade. Around the same time, a Croatian woman married to a Serbian citizen was ordered to leave Serbia after she showed public support for the protests, but the measure was revoked after the case became public.
