Unit 2 at Romania's Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant will remain in operation, the plant's operator, Nuclearelectrica, said in a press release received at BTA on Thursday.

Earlier, Romania's Ministry of Energy announced that the unit would be taken offline as a precautionary measure due to record-low water levels in the Danube River.

Nuclearelectrica now said: "Unit 2 will remain connected to the national power grid. Following an analysis of the unit's operating parameters and equipment carried out by the plant's specialists overnight between July 29 and July 30, it was determined that the operating conditions allow for its continued safe operation."

Nuclearelectrica warned, however, that given the current situation and hydrological forecasts for the Danube's water levels, Unit 2 may have to be shut down at any time.

The operator took Cernavoda's Unit 1 offline on Tuesday as the Danube water level fell dangerously low. The plant uses water from the Danube as a coolant.

The Cernavoda NPP typically generates around 20% of Romania's electricity.
