A total of 64 fires in forest and agricultural areas broke out across Greece over the past 48 hours, Greek public broadcaster ERT reported on Monday, citing information from the Fire Service.

According to the data, most of the fires were caused by human negligence during outdoor activities, mainly in rural areas.

The Fire Service noted that the high temperatures in recent days had contributed to the outbreak and rapid spread of the fires. Most of them were brought under control at an early stage, without populated areas being threatened.

The Fire Risk Forecast Map for Monday shows a low risk for much of the country and a medium risk for Attica, which includes the capital Athens, the northeastern island of Evia, and the regions of Boeotia, Phthiotis and Phocis in Central Greece.

From January 1 to June 7, 2026, a total of 402 administrative fines amounting to EUR 383,397 were imposed in Greece, while 71 people were arrested for violations of legislation related to causing fires.

More than 100 drones will monitor fires in Greece this year, the online edition of Greek newspaper Ethnos reported in late May. The devices will be available to the Fire Service and Civil Protection authorities. The aim is to ensure constant monitoring of forest areas.
