The Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) and Greece’s Regulatory Authority for Energy, Waste, and Water have signed a Cooperation Agreement in the field of regulation of water and sewerage services, the EWRC said on Friday.
At an official ceremony held in Thessaloniki, Greece, the document was signed by EWRC Chair Plamen Mladenovski and RAAEY Acting President Dimitrios Fourlaris.
The agreement establishes a contractual framework for bilateral cooperation in regulating the water and sewerage sector. Since 2023, RAAEY has also taken on responsibility for regulating water and sewerage services and the management of municipal waste.
Until now, the two regulators have maintained active contact within international organizations, primarily through the European Network of Water Regulators (WAREG).
The signed agreement provides for EWRC and RAAEY to hold working meetings and seminars on mutually agreed topics. They will exchange information on regulatory policies and processes in the water sector, share knowledge and experience on current regulatory issues, and discuss solutions to common challenges.
The cooperation agreement in the water sector builds upon the already established close bilateral collaboration between the national regulatory authorities of Bulgaria and Greece.
“With the signing of this cooperation agreement, EWRC and RAAEY are creating a legal framework for interaction aimed at improving the quality of the regulatory process,” emphasized Plamen Mladenovski, Chair of the EWRC, following the signing ceremony.
During the visit, the two delegations held a working meeting, where they discussed a wide range of issues of mutual interest in the field of regulatory activities.
