On June 14, 2013, an official opening ceremony was held for New Europe Bridge between Bulgaria's Vidin and Romania's Calafat. Also known as Danube Bridge 2, it is the second bridge to be built over the Danube between Bulgaria and Romania after the one connecting Ruse and Giurgiu.

Attending the ceremony were National Assembly Chair Mihail Mikov, the President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Romanian Parliament, Valeriu Zgonea, Prime Ministers Plamen Oresharski of Bulgaria and Victor Ponta of Romania, and European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn.

The first sod of Danube Bridge 2 was turned on May 13, 2007 by Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev at the 796 km of the Danube.

The bridge is 3,598 m long and made with 30 million kg of iron. Danube Bridge 2 has two lanes for cars, a railway line, a pedestrian sidewalk, and a bicycle lane.
