On this date in Bulgarian history:

1877: Russian troops cross Danube River at Svishtov during Russo-Turkish War of Liberation (1877-1878).

1879: In Tarnovo (today's Veliko Tarnovo), Prince Alexander of Battenberg proclaims he is ascending the throne.

1946: National Assembly nationalizes insurance companies, imposing state monopoly on insurance sector. State Insurance Institute (DZI) is set up.

1985: Bulgarian Football Union is set up.

On this date in Bulgarian history:

1858: First Bulgarian comprehensive secondary school outside country's territory, Sts Cyril and Methodius People's Central School (now G. S. Rakovski Bolhrad Secondary School), is established in Bolhrad (Bolgrad), Bessarabia (now in Ukraine).

1887: Government headed by Konstantin Stoilov is formed (in office until August 20, 1887).

1903: Adrianople Revolutionary District of Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization holds congress in Petrova Niva locality of Mt Strandja and decides to organize uprising against Ottoman rule.

1914: Sofia Stock Exchange holds constituent meeting, marking beginning of organized stock trading in Bulgaria.

1968: Chemical Combined Works inaugurated in Vratsa (Northwestern Bulgaria) (privatized as Chimco in 1996, ceased operation in 2003, declared bankrupt in 2006).

1995: National Assembly passes Act to Amend and Supplement Environmental Protection Act, establishing National Trust EcoFund (NTEF).

2000: In Plovdiv, South Central Bulgaria, Bulgarian Red Cross opens country's first social care institution, set up with assistance of Spanish Red Cross.

2004: First participation of Bulgaria as NATO full member in Istanbul summit. Bulgaria is represented by President Georgi Purvanov and Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
