On November 15, 1986, a two-day international forum entitled Children and Peace opened in Sofia. The event was part of the United Nations (UN) initiatives to mark the International Year of Peace.
Cultural and artistic figures from 20 countries took part in the initiative. They discussed issues related to children's interest and involvement in art and peaceful coexistence as a condition for the creative development of young people around the world—ideas that were laid down by the Banner of Peace movement established in 1979.
Children from 11 countries were also guests at the two-day event held at the National Palace of Culture. A concert by children's vocal groups and instrumental ensembles closed the forum.
