The aging of the population, one of the most significant demographic trends in Bulgaria, continues to accelerate, data from the 2023-2024 Report on the implementation of the National Comprehensive Strategy for Active Ageing in Bulgaria (2019-2030), adopted by the Council of Ministers at its meeting on Tuesday, shows.

At the end of 2024, there will be 1,544,245 people aged 65 and over, or 24% of the population. Compared to 2023, the share of the population in this age group will increase by 0.2 percentage points and compared to 2011 by 5.1 percentage points.

The implementation of the National Comprehensive Strategy for Active Ageing in Bulgaria (2019-2030) aims to create opportunities for their participation in the social and economic development of society. The measures are grouped into four priority areas: employment, social participation, independent living, and capacity building and creating active aging enabling environment.

To implement them, programmes for subsidised employment of pre-retirement age individuals have been worked out, implemented with national and EU funding, providing vocational training, improving working conditions, promoting lifelong learning, etc. Measures for social inclusion are also being implemented through support for cultural initiatives, social services, preventive healthcare, screenings, etc.
