Bulgaria is fully keeping pace with developments in the field of hydrogen, as globally the technology has not yet reached a scale comparable to established energy solutions, Deputy Minister of Innovation and Growth Georgi Angelov said on Tuesday. He was speaking at a conference in Sofia entitled “Strategic Energy Technologies: Bulgaria on the Road to Innovation in Data Centres, Energy Storage and Green Fuels”, organized by the Net-Zero Lab of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Sofia University.
Angelov noted that the Ministry of Innovation and Growth works to attract investment and maintain competitiveness, and is responsible for policy related to the development of hydrogen technology in Bulgaria. According to him, a new community for energy innovation is emerging in Bulgaria.
He stressed that energy policies should be interdisciplinary, and that such an approach is increasingly being observed. “We have not yet fully achieved this – not only in Bulgaria, but across Europe – both in terms of policy and financing,” Angelov emphasized.
At the European Union level, the main objective remains the deployment of green energy, the Deputy Minister noted, adding that Bulgaria is also working on developing nuclear energy through the construction of two new reactor units at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant site.
The topic of small modular reactors is also relevant, he added. “We have been actively working on this in recent months. There is significant interest from the business sector,” Angelov said.
