The exhibition "Azerbaijan on the Path to State Sovereignty" opened in the central foyer of Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski on Friday, with official guests including Vice Rector for International Relations Reneta Bozhankova, Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Republic of Bulgaria Chargé d’Affaires Chingiz Garibli, and Dean of the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology Gergana Petkova.
At the opening, Director of the Centre for Azerbaijani Language and Culture, Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski, Sofia Shigaeva-Mitreska, said Azerbaijan is an example of how a country can successfully combine loyalty to its national values with partnership and dialogue with other States worldwide. Among these, she noted a special place for cooperation between Azerbaijan and Bulgaria, two countries bound by deep historical, cultural and spiritual ties. She said bilateral diplomatic relations, now over 30 years old, had achieved the level of strategic partnership.
Charge d’Affaires at the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Republic of Bulgaria Chingiz Garibli said the 1995 Constitution marked a turning point in Azerbaijan’s history. Drafted under the guidance of President Heydar Aliyev, it set a stable legal foundation for state governance, secured human and civil rights, and affirmed the principles of independence and national sovereignty. Garibli noted that this year has been designated the Year of the Constitution and Sovereignty in Azerbaijan, commemorating two major milestones: the 30th anniversary of the adoption of Azerbaijan’s Constitution in 1995 and the fifth anniversary of the 2020 Karabakh War victory, which achieved the full restoration of national sovereignty under President Ilham Aliyev’s dedicated leadership.
Reneta Bozhankova described the opening of the exhibition as a symbol of respect and friendship between the people of Bulgaria and Azerbaijan.
Gergana Petkova said, “The University’s mission is to educate students and uphold their freedom: to encourage boldness and the ability to stand firm.”
