Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov said here on Saturday that there will be a much accelerated modernization of the Bulgarian Armed Forces in all types of combat capabilities, as well as in the field of security and logistics. He was speaking at a solemn ceremony for the military oath of the cadets from the 152nd class of the Vasil Levski National Military University in Shumen.

More than 170 first-year cadets, who are beginning their training at the military academy, took the military oath. The event was also attended by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, members of Parliament, representatives of local authorities, and senior military officials.

"Be optimistic. The army you are joining today will be radically different in five years," the Defence Minister told the cadets. "The military oath is a bond between your life and your homeland, and its fulfillment is unquestionable. It requires you to wear your epaulettes with honour, dignity, and most importantly, to serve your homeland faithfully, which is your parents, relatives, friends, the people, and our sacred land, which our ancestors fought for and bequeathed to us to keep inviolable and intact," Zapryanov said in his address.

"We are on the eve of the 140th anniversary of the Serbian-Bulgarian War, in which the Bulgarian army, with weapons in hand, secured the Unification and made our homeland united. Let these examples of the military glory of your ancestors inspire you," the Minister added.

He wished the cadets good luck, encouraging them to study hard and master military science, because this knowledge will be necessary for their future work as commanders in the Bulgarian army.
