Following a request for assistance via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, Bulgaria expects two planes and four helicopters from other member states to help combat wildfires in its territory. The aircraft will begin arriving on Sunday afternoon, the head of the Fire Safety and Civil Protection Directorate General, Alexander Dzhartov, said on Nova TV on Sunday morning.
Dzhartov explained that the helicopters will be coming from Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and France, while the two planes will arrive from Sweden. They are primarily needed for a wildfire in the municipality of Strumyani, in the southwest of Bulgaria.
Dzhartov said: “The largest fire at the moment is near Ilindentsi, Strumyani Municipality. Yesterday, the blaze spread uncontrollably, and we had to evacuate the crews on the ground. The second fire is in the villages around Tran, and it continues to spread into forested areas. The third major fire, which remains a challenge, is near the village of Lesovo. It is not yet under control and has crossed the border into Turkiye.”
There are currently no reports of injuries, he added, but confirmed that there has been damage to property.
