A conference on the prospects for Bulgaria after the adoption of the euro, including its effect on education, was held in Varna on Monday. The conference was attended by Education and Science Minister Krasimir Valchev, Varna University of Economics Rector Prof. Evgeni Stanimirov, University of National and World Economy Rector Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov, as well as scientists, experts and representatives of the two higher education institutions.

The Education Minister states that he did not expect the adoption of the euro to lead to any upheavals in the education system, which will have its first budget in the new currency in 2026. The minister voiced regret that the information environment in Bulgaria, and especially the social networks, allow fake news to be published and a lot of speculation to be made. "By adopting the euro, Bulgaria is completing its European integration process, and the benefits for the country will be long-term," Valchev pointed out. He emphasized that the transition will be smooth, since Bulgaria has been in a currency board for 28 years and has practically given up on independent monetary policy.

Joining the eurozone creates preconditions, whether they will be positive or not depends on the people and their actions, Stanimirov said. He stressed that almost all public discussions for and against the exchange of the lev with European currency make no attempt to see the whole picture. "In recent years, many things have happened in our country, although we have a bad habit of highlighting only the negative ones," he commented, adding that there has been an increase in both incomes and prices. "We are facing third-generation reforms related to combating corruption, improving education, renewing the infrastructure and optimizing the work of institutions," Stanimirov emphasized, noting that this complex of actions should make Bulgaria better prepared for the challenges of the future in areas such as demography, technology, and climate change.

The University of National and World Economy Rector stressed that more communication campaigns are needed for the adoption of the euro. He noted that discussions are being held on the topic, tables and figures are being shown, but they bring clarity mainly to specialists, not to the general public. He emphasized that this is also one of the reasons why a lot of speculation is spreading. He pointed out that serious arguments are hard to hear, because somehow apocalyptic scenarios are more attractive to people. That is exactly why more flexible communication campaigns are needed at a level understandable to all people, Dimitrov pointed out. "When talking about money, about economic relations, trust is always of great importance," the rector said.
