Bulgaria has capacity in the high-tech sector and will continue to develop it, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Innovation and Growth Tomislav Donchev said here on Sunday. He was speaking at a forum of GERB's youth organization in his capacity as Deputy Chairman of the party.
"The future is connected with both opportunities and threats. We have to move between futurophobia, or fear of the future, on the one hand, and the boundless enthusiasm associated with mastering new technologies. I am definitely not going to present a ‘rosy’ narrative, because the future is full of threats. I am referring to the severely deteriorated security environment, military conflicts, resource depletion, environmental pollution, climate change. All the risks associated with artificial intelligence are not top of mind. First and foremost, the social conflict of the next two to three decades will be related to the advancement of high technology in healthcare," Donchev believes.
"Europe has to decide what it wants - to regulate AI, or to invest purposefully. We need to do both, with an emphasis on the latter," Donchev argued. In his words, artificial intelligence will not take anyone's job. “I am working on the issue of Bulgaria being able to take full advantage of these opportunities,” he said.
"The available technologies and the Bulgarian language model developed by INSAIT can be implemented by public administrations, making their services faster, more transparent and corruption-proof. We need to deliver high quality based on Bulgarian intelligence to Bulgarian businesses very quickly," Donchev said. According to him, Bulgaria should have a long-term horizon of 15 or 20 years for the development of technology.
