Prices of most vegetables are continuing to decline on Bulgaria’s wholesale markets, while those of some fruits and staple foods are going up, according to the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets.
The market index for wholesale food prices in Bulgaria increased by 0.22 percentage points to 2.230 points over the past week. The base level of 1 point was set in 2005.
In the vegetables category, new potatoes recorded the largest decrease, falling by 22.8% to BGN 1.21 per kilogramme. Old potatoes went down by 11.5% to BGN 1.18/kg. Cabbage depreciated by 7.7% to BGN 1.20/kg and tomatoes by 7.6% to BGN 2.33/kg. Red peppers dropped by 7% to BGN 2.93/kg; green peppers by 4.9% to BGN 3.29/kg. Carrots went up by 5.3% to BGN 1.44/kg, onions by 2.8% to BGN 1.26/kg, and cucumbers by 0.1% to BGN 1.83/kg.
In the fruit category, apricots and strawberries saw the largest price drop, falling by 17.9% to BGN 4.35/kg and by 14.5% to BGN 4.85/kg, respectively. The price of lemons went down by 3.2% to BGN 3.12/kg. Cherries appreciated by 12.1% to BGN 9.05/kg; apples by 5.3% to BGN 2.39/kg.
The price of white brined cheese from cow's milk went down by 0.7% to BGN 11.34/kg. The yellow kashkaval cheese of the Vitosha type also saw a drop of 0.7%, falling to BGN 18.40/kg.
The price of yogurt (with a fat content of 3% and over) decreased by 1.7% to BGN 1.35 per 400 grammes. Milk dropped by 0.7% to BGN 2.29 per litre. Butter from cow's milk went down by 2.1% to BGN 3.05 for 125 grammes.
The wholesale price of poultry fell by 2.1% to BGN 6.70/kg, while that of eggs (size M) rose by 4.9% to BGN 0.34 per piece.
Rice appreciated by 0.9% to BGN 3.32/kg. The price of flour (type 500) increased by 2.9% to BGN 1.55/kg. Sunflower oil went up by 1.2% to BGN 3.28/litre. Sugar rose by 6% to BGN 1.95/kg. The price of beans fell by 3.7% to BGN 4.23/kg. Lentils saw a 2.8% price decrease, trading at BGN 4.27/kg.
