Nearly 38% of Bulgarians do not plan or are unable to take a vacation this summer, according to a sociological survey, conducted by the Myara polling agency and published here on Tuesday.

The study was conducted face-to-face using tablets among 806 adult Bulgarian citizens between May 8 and 16, 2025. The maximum standard deviation is ±3.5% at 50% share, and 1% of the sample corresponds to approximately 54,000 people.

Those who stated they would not go on holiday are mainly elderly people from smaller settlements. A total of 33.2% of respondents say they will vacation in Bulgaria, 11.9% abroad, and 9.6% intend to take holidays both in Bulgaria and abroad. Nearly 8% are undecided, the survey shows.

Households have set aside an average of BGN 2,200 for their vacation. Naturally, economically active age groups are those able to allocate more funds, the agency commented.

According to the survey, the most preferred type of vacation is a seaside holiday, with 38.9% choosing this option, while 15.3% prefer a non-seaside vacation and 16.1% are unsure. Nearly 4% cannot make a decision. The agency highlights that 25.9% fall into the category of “can't afford to consider such things.”

Summer vacations less affordable for the elderly, members of minority groups, and people living in rural areas, the agency noted, adding that in studies related to living standards and affordability, respondents are not always fully honest in their answers.
