Vice President Iliana Iotova told reporters here on Friday that a new civilization, the Slavic one, originated from Pliska to determine the fate of Bulgaria and the entire Slavic world over the centuries to come and will continue to do so in the future. She attended the celebrations marking the 1,160th anniversary of Bulgaria's Christianization and 1,170th anniversary of the creation of the Glagolitic script that would later be used to create the Cyrillic alphabet.
Iotova said that the united Slavs, Thracians and Proto-Bulgarians entered a new period on the political map of Europe as a united nation with the creation of their own script. She added: "Both language and Christianity became the basis of literacy for all Slavs."
Patriarch Daniil told reporters: "Out of the bare earth, out of the pagan faith, emerged a unique culture, a faith that has given so many saints to our people, that has really shown us the way from earth to heaven - through much faith, humility, struggle, courage, overcoming difficulties."
Other attendees at the service held by Patriarch Daniil included Parliament Chair Nataliya Kiselova, Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov, Minister of Education and Science Krasimir Valchev, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, regional governors, scholar, mayors, members of the public.
