The Srechenska Bara Reservoir, which supplies water to Montana, Vratsa, Berkovitsa, Varshets and about twenty other settlements in Northwestern Bulgaria, is full almost to the brim of the spillway, the Montana Regional Administration said on Friday.

They pointed out that the reservoir has collected 15.2 million cubic metres of water out of a maximum possible volume of 15.5 million cubic metres. The filling of the reservoir will ensure that even in a dry summer with scant rainfall, there will be no water scarcity in Montana and the settlements in the region that draw water from it, Montana Regional Governor Kalin Haitov emphasised.

He recalled that in 2025, despite the lack of rainfall and the heat in July and August, there was no water scarcity in Montana.

Haitov stressed that the Ogosta Reservoir near Montana currently holds only 190.5 million cubic metres of water, out of a maximum capacity of 506 million cubic metres, adding that the reservoir can absorb any intense rainfall. The receding water has allowed rarely seen islands to appear in the middle of the reservoir. Large strips of land have appeared along the coasts as well, with local people and guests from other parts of Bulgaria enjoying fishing, hiking and outdoor picnics.
