Bulgaria’s future accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) was discussed between Bulgarian President Rumen Radev and OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormann in Greece on Wednesday, the President’s press secretariat reported. The two met during the Delphi Economic Forum, taking place between April 9 and 10.

Radev said the reforms which Bulgaria is making in order to accede to the OECD are just as significant for the country as membership itself. Joining the organization is a key foreign policy objective for Sofia, and all relevant national institutions are working for it, he said. The country has successfully passed 11 out of 25 reviews required for joining the OECD and is working to complete the rest by the end of 2025.

Cormann acknowledged Bulgaria’s progress towards membership, noting that all three EU member states aspiring to join the OECD can finalize the technical reviews by the year’s end. He said the OECD Secretariat will continue to support the candidate countries within its powers.

Radev and Cormann exchanged views on the dynamic developments in the world. They concurred that the tariff war, which escalates with every passing day, will inevitably have social as well as economic consequences.
